Mbugua Njihia (COO at SafiriExpress)

Mbugua Njihia

COO at SafiriExpress

I am an entrepreneur with over 15 years’ experience in the web and mobile industry, instrumental in the set up and operations of some of the regions inaugural and most visible mobile value added services. Having held key positions, I possess unique insight that marries technology to the market place.

My current role is to drive go to market and service growth at Sure Corporation by nurturing business relationships, closing on key partnerships and most important ... sales!

Companies around the world have successfully deployed web and mobile solutions to increase sales, reduce costs, streamline communications and create competitive advantage. Yet despite their success, these companies represent only a fraction of those that realize the potential of mobile especially in the African context.

However, there remains a lack of expertise in what works and what doesn't and how to apply these advances to achieve business value. I fill in this void by providing business and technology consulting to companies, governments, non-governmental organizations, SME’s and individuals looking to realize the full benefit of technology.

Building on broad industry knowledge, networks and many years of experience designing and implementing “mission-critical” solutions, I leverage my knowledge to deliver measurable business results, reduce implementation risk and achieve project success.

I have consulted for the Government of Kenya with special focus on consolidating efforts to take government services closer to the citizen as well as recommending models to ensure sustainability.

Specialties: Mobile technology strategy, Solution architecture, Business modelling, Partnership building, Custom platform development, User experience evaluation and design, Monetization on mobile, Mobile Value Added Services, Technology consulting and Project management

Carol Odero (Editor-in-Chief at CIO East Africa)

Carol Odero

Editor-in-Chief at CIO East Africa

Vividly creative. Ambitious. Curious. Dynamic. Versatile.

In the beginning, there was a lawyer who became a business journalist who became a lifestyle journalist who turned into a fashion journalist and ended up as a tech journalist.

How did this happen, I hear you ask. Well, it all started when I was 17... But, that is too far back. Instead, let us go to the day of my swearing-in in 2006. On a day where only I knew that Thursday - swearing-ins for some reason always happened on Thursdays in my time - that come Monday, I would walk into the Nation Media Group newsroom and not the courtroom as someone of my ilk was expected to.

As my peers started their legal careers, I went all the way to the bottom of the rung and started out as an intern on the newsdesk. I worked my way to a photo-byline two months in, earned myself another column almost immediately, and by December 2006, I was a full-fledged contributor at Nation writing three weekly columns and immersing myself in both the features and business journalism desk.

A year and then some in, I was courted by True Love EA magazine for a one-on-one with Richard Branson. I took a slight detour into writing for Adam, Kenya's first ever male lifestyle magazine. Here, at the magazine level, maintaining my trio of Nation columns, I thrived.

I must have done something right seeing how I was eventually tapped to run my own magazine. DRUM is regarded as the very first lifestyle magazine in the African continent. My DRUM was an East African off-shoot of the original. A receptacle for prolific, sometimes difficult personalities. I worked with, and led, a remarkably talented team.

I interviewed Nobel Laureates, fashion luminaries, Kenyan politicians and other very formidable humans. There was a fashion magazine involved at some point.

Then, I hit a ceiling. I had been typecast as a fashionista while in fact, I was a journalist who happened to cover the lifestyle, culture cum fashion beat. I felt stuck in this rut. I took a break to reinvent myself. Skirting the edges of journalism with a label that wouldn't quit. Somewhere inside my sabbatical, I got a surprising call. A job offer. To join a tech publication. Of course, I said yes. What is life without unexpected detours? Here we are. At another beginning.

This is a giant leap without even a hint of a safety net in my career as Editor-in-Chief, CIO East Africa. Once again, I am interviewing, meeting and profiling brilliant minds. It appears to be my lot in life. I have made peace with it.

I am a storyteller. And this is my story. What's yours?
